NEW SOUTH WALES TITLE WON BY A YOUTH. SYDNEY, June 28. In the final of the amateur golf championship of New South Wales J. Ferrier defeated E. E. Apperly, the title holder, one up. Ferrier, who is aged only 16, stands 6 feet 2 inches, and weighs 14 stone. He is regarded as a phenomenal golfer, as he has already beaten many first-class players in local competitions. He resides at Manly, where he holds the locaj championship. Both Apperly and Ferrier played magnificent and sporting golf, except for one hole in afternoon, the eleventh, where Apperly took a seven. The match was in the balance to the last green. Ferrier was dormie three. He lost the thirty-fourth and thirty-fifth, and halved the last hole. The crowd was a very large one, nearly 7000 following the players. Apperly in the past has been amateur State champion five times. Ferrier’s coolness and gameness were remarkable, considering his extreme youth. The boy set such a pace that Apperly had a stern fight all through, and there was a thrill at every hole.
RYDER CUP CONTEST THE OPENING MATCHES. NEW YORK. June 26. Playing at the Scioto Country Chib at Columbus (Ohio) Walter Hagen and Densmore Shute (United States) defeated George Duncan and Arthur Havers (England) in a two-ball foursome, 10 and 9. In the Ryder Cup play to-day Johnny Farrell and Gene > Sarazen (United States) defeated Archie Compston and Billie Davies (England), 8 and 7; Abe Mitchell and Fred Robson (England) defeated Leo Diegel and Al Espinosa, -3 and 1. AMERICA WINS THE CUP. v NEW YORK. June 27. In the Ryder Cup match at Columbus to-day Sarazen defeated Robson 7 and 6: Burke defeated Compston 7*and 6, Shute . defeated Bert Hodson 8 and 6, Davies i defeated Farrell 4 and 3, Hagen defeated ■ Charles Whitcombe 4 and 3, Cox defeated Mitchell 3 and 1, Havers defeated Craig Moon 4 and 3, Espinosa defeated Ernest Whitcombe 2 and 1. The United States regained the cup, the final score being nine to three. ST. CLAIR CLUB. Wintry conditions prevailed for the Bogey Handicap at. Corstoiphine links on Saturday, and as a result the field was not a large one. A. C. Paterson (handicap 21) returned the winning card of 2 down, which was a good score under the conditions. Many competitors failed to return cards, and the following were the best scores in:—A. C. Faterson (21) 2 down, S. E. Field (4) 8 down, S. M. Satterthwaite (21) 8 down, F. Elsom (18) 9 down, J Dobbie (20) 9 down.
