O T AGO WITNESS
WHEAT DUTIES.
WELLINGTON, June 25. An early opportunity was taken by several members to raise the question of wheat duties in the House to-day. Mr C. A. Wilkinson (Egmont) asked whether, under the schedule proposed by the Government, wheat could not be imported into New Zealand at less than 6s 5d a bushel and flour at less than £l4 12s a ton. Did the Government propose to add to the protection by calculating the duty on the basis of the Australian depreciated currency? If so, what would be the amount of the additional protection? Mr C. L. Carr (Timaru) called upon the Government for an expert committee representing the producers of wheat, flour, and bread, and also the consumers’ view, ensuring a minimum price of 4s 9d per bushel to the growers and fixing the maximum price of flour, wheat, offals, and bread. .Mr J. A. Young (Waikato) asked, in view of. the widespread distress, if the Government would endeavour to reduce the price of bread, especially in the northern provinces, in accordance with the general reduction of earnings and values operating throughout New Zealand.
