SHEEP DOG TRIALS.
PALMERSTON. The Palmerston Collie Club’s trials were concluded on June 18. The maiden and open huntaway events were competed for by 35 dogs, the work being very satisfactory. About 75 per cent, of the dogs completing the course within the time limit, although this year the, course was made considerably harder by moving 'the final poles further up the hill. The leading dogs made outstanding runs. The sheep, generally speaking, were good, but n little on the fast side, to allow the dogs to .show good forcing work, only two or tliree lots showing any teu-
dency to stubbornness. The possible points were: Huntaway 12, command 12, noise 8, slew 10; —total, 42. The results were as follow:— Open Huntaway.—F. M'Gregor’s Glen 41 points, 1; lan Andersons Bob, 40 points, 2; W. Monk’s Sweep, 39 points, 3; C. M Erlane’s Romp, 38 points, 4; G. MAughtrie’s Black, 36, 5. Glen got through the first flags in 16 second? straight and in good style; through second nags in 55 seconds; had weak sheep fiom foot of hill; noise very good; command good. Bob hunted through the first flags in 45 seconds in good line; through second flags in Imin 45sec; through third (lags in 4mm 6sec; good command and style, a very good performance. Sweep hunted through the first flags in 35sec; through second flags in Imin 40sec; through third flags in 4min 37sec. Maideit Huntaway.—G. ATAughtrie's Black. 36 points. 1: J. M'Gregor’s Sweep, 29 points, 2; F. M'Gregor’s Jess, 28 points, 3; T. L. Bowker’s Toss, 24 points, 4; W. E. Aubrey’s Toss, 21 points, 5. Black hunted through the first set of flags in 40 seconds; gave wrong slew between nags; through second flags in Imin 45sec; hunted in good line through third flags in 4min 45sec. Sweep hunted through the first set of flags in Imin 20sec; nearly ( missed; gave wrong slew between first and second flags; one sheep missed at second flags; dog in wrong position; dog too far away from sheep; through thira flags in 9min 55sec. Jess got through flags in 2min 15sec; required a lot of orders; let sheep back; made good hunt between first and second flags; through second flags in smin; hunted well between second and third flags, but gave wrong slew below third flags, and failed to <x>mplete before time limit. Local Event (Huntaway—Head. Pull, and Yard). —George Roberts’s Gyp, 31 points, 1; David Ross’s Gyp, H. Ross’s Scott, and F. Gallaway’s Gyp, 30 points (equal), 2. At the conclusion of the meeting the vice-president (Air D. Ross) thanked all those connected with the running of the trials for their assistance, and also those who had assisted the club in a very liberal manner with donations and trophies. The following special prizes were awarded:—Teachers’ Cup, for best mustering team. Air James Af‘Gregor (Becks); Airs H. Ross’s cup for winner of local event, Air George Roberts; Air John Philip’s gold medal for competitor gaining most points in Open Head (class 2) and Open Huntaway (class 3), one dog in each event. Mr John Anderj-on (Kurow) ; Mrs Ross’s £2 2s, for maiden dog gaining most points in Open Head (class 2), Air G. P. Johnston (Alma): Mr Alexander Stewart’s £2 2s, for com petitor scoring highest aggregate at trials. Air John Anderson; Mrs Alunro’s £2 2s. for competitor gaining highest points in Open Heading (classes 1 and 2), Mr John Anderson; Air George Roberts’s £2 2s, for maiden dog scoring most points in Open Huntaway (class 3). G. APAtightrie; Air W. Murray’s trophy, for local competitor scoring most points in classes 1. 2, and 3. Air Harry Ross. Mr Hugh Ross presented the cups and other trophies to the successful competitors. The judge (Air Peter Boyd, of Lovell’s Flat) gave every satisfaction.
