THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM. MINOR COUNTIES MATCH HOME SIDE MAKES 191. LONDON, June 17. Heavy rain prevented a start in the match New Zealand v. the Minor Counties "before lunch. The ground was sodden. Gainsborough people were looking forward keenly to the match. The weather, however, cleared after lunch, and play commenced at 3 o’clock. In the New Zealand team Vivian, Cromb, and Matheson are standing down. The counties team is: Elderton, Cook, Remnant, Kingsley, Fordham, Homer Rafferty, Frearson, Ward, "Walters, Lock. Lowry lost the toss. Homer and Cook started well, -adding 85 for the first wicket. They were separated after tea, when Cook was smartly stumped. Merritt then took three wiekets fairly rapidly, bowling Kingsley (last year’s captain of Oxford University) with a well-pitched googly. Fordham and Frearson resisted the New Zealand attack, but Lowry proved an effective change bowler. He took three wickets cheaply, and Frearson and Walters with successive balls. The wicket played easily and the ball turned but slowly. Merritt bowled well. Allcott was unlucky not to meet with more success than 'he did. NEW ZEALAND DECLARES. LONDON, June IS. New Zealand, with 3GI for eight wiekets, declared their first innings closed in the match against the Minor Counties. The game was resumed in fine weather and the wicket was easy. Mills scored a brilliant century. He attacked the bowling from the start, and although he gave several chances he was always master of the attack. He went out off the only really weak shot of his innings. He had batted 218 miuutes for 150, bis score including 17 4’s. Kerr showed signs of a return to his customary enterprising batting. Lowry and Talbot both gave vigorous displays. The counties’ bowling was not difficult, although the wicket played occasional tricks. The counties batted for half an hour before stumps were drawn, scoring 14 without loss of a wicket. Cook was dropped in the final over.
THUNDERSTORM CAUSES ABANDONMENT. LONDON, June 19. A thunderstorm delayed the resumption of the match, New Zealand v. Minor Counties, play not commencing until after lunch. The wicket, which had been covered during the morning, played easily. After 110 minutes’ play, with the Counties’ score 115 for three wickets, a further thunderstorm interrupted the game, and caused the match to be abandoned. The weather was not favourable for cricket, being bitterly cold. The New Zealand bowling lacked sting, although Lowry again proved a successful change bowler. Homer batted soundly for the Counties, driving powerfully. Mills’s batting success of the previous day was most gratifying in view of the proximity of the test. He drove with refreshing freedom, and with Merritt was responsible for clever running between the wickets. Scores:— MINOR COUNTIES. First Innings.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MATCH. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE SCORES WELL. LONDON, June 20. The New Zealand bowling at Peterborough fell below standard against Northamptonshire. Lowry won the toss and sent the county in. The wicket proved dead and gave no assistance to the bowlers. The weather was fine and the attendance was 5000. Dempster, Blunt and Allcott stood down from the New Zealand side. A feature of Northamptonshire’s innings was a sterling century by Bakewell, who is only 22 years of age, a strong candidate for the position of Sutcliffe’s partner in the test, and chief rival to Arnold, of Hampshire. Against New Zealand Arnold was dismissed cheaply, but Bakewell showed himself a batsman of great promise. He was more aggressive than the average English opening batsmen and possessed shots all round the wicket. He batted for 220 minutes and hit three sixes and 11 fours. He played Merritt confidently The New Zealand googly bowler had an off day. Bakewell’s forward shots were particularly impressive. He also hooked
unmercifully any short deliveries. Jupp batted freely after an uncertain start. He was caught in the slips off Merritt’s leg spinner. Matthews hit hard in a lucky innings. The New Zealand attack was never really daugerous. Matheson troubled the batsmen occasionally and deserved more success. Vivian was steady, but was inclined to pitch the ball too far on the off Vivian bowled 32 overs, Merritt 20, Matheson 25, including 10 maidens, and Cromb 23, including 10 maidens. Merritt retired later in the afternoon owing to an injury to his hand received while attempting to take a hard return catch. The injury is not serious.
