NEW ZEALAND BUTTER
EFFORT TO INCREASE MARKET. WELLINGTON, June 20. In December last the attention of the Empire Marketing Board was drawn to the serious position of the overseas Empire dairy industries, and in particular to the critical state of the New Zealand butter industry. The board at a meeting on December 17 agreed that some immediate action was imperative, and after consultations with representatives of the Australian and New Zealand Dairy Produce Boards and the Ministry of Agriculture it was decided to employ six men to canvass the wholesalers and retailers in Lancashire. An office was opened in Manchester on January 12, and an organiser appointed with a staff of five canvassers. Four months ago Empire butters were obtainable in Liverpool and Manchester from five importers and a few of the larger wholesalers. To-day the board’s officers a r e not aware of a wholesaler in these cities who is not handling them. The canvassers have been engaged in calling upon every retail grocer in Manchester, Stockport, Wigan, Warrington. Bolton, Oldham, Bury, Chorley, Blackburn, Preston, and Rochdale with the most satisfactory results and good prospects for the future enlargement of the trade.
