CITY COUNCIL FUNDS
ALLEGED THEFT BY CASHIER ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. WELLINGTON, June 17. Formerly cashier in the City Rates office. Arthur Wallace Richardson, a middle-aged man, was committed by Mr E. Page. S.M., in the Police Court today to the Supreme Court for trial on a charge of the theft of £96 Is 2d, the property x>f the City’ Council. It was alleged that this sum was received over the counter on April 23, and had not been lodged in the credit district fund in the bank. The accused was allowed bail on his bond of £lOO, with a surety for a similar amount. / It was stated in evidence that the accused used the current day’s takings to make up the previous day s banking total, which was made up to 3.30 p.m., the takings after that going to the next day’s totals. _ When the fact that the money was missing was discovered the accused denied any knowledge of it. At first it was believed that the money had been removed from the safe by’ some person who had obtained means of access. The accused said that it was possible to open the safe with a penknife. The safe was kept in the strongroom, which had a burglar alarm. The alarm went on Anzac night and once about Easter. They had never found who it was caused it to start.
