An interesting comparison between the cost of the old compulsory territorial scheme and the estimated cost of the training scheme that is now being launched was made by Colonel J. E. Duigan at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Auckland. In answer to a question, he said the amount voted in the last year of compulsory service was £460,000 and the vote for the new force was £230,000. The number of men being dealt with under the new scheme was considerably smaller than under the old.
