COURSING

DUNEDIN CLUB’S MEETING PRETTY ROSE WINS BOYLE CUP. The Dunedin Coursing Club’s June meeting was held on Saturday at Forbury Park under ideal weather conditions. Although the coursing generally was good, the game, on the majority of occasions, proved a little too clever for the dogs, and kills were few. The plumpton was in fair condition, but the long grass at the upper end hampered the competitors considerably, besides giving the hare a decided advantage in several of the courses. Entries were not up to expectations, and there were only seven competitors 111 each of the two courses decided—the Boyle Challenge Cup and the Maiden The Boyle Cup was won by Mr F. Mitchell’s Pretty Rose, which scored meritorious wins in the heat, semi-final, and final of the event, the runner-up being Mr M'Dougall’s Royal Saxon. Two clever young dogs, Oakland Blue and Royal Saxon, came together in the final of the Maiden Stake, in which there was little between them until the latter stages of the course, when the winner’s superior condition told, and he won by a margin of six points. The following are the results: — BOYLE CHALLENGE CUP. Winner, £lO ss; runner-up, £5 ss. First Round. Mr E. O’Connor’s f and w b Gipsy’s Warning (Grey Gipsy—Lady Belfast) beat Mr C. Marks’s blk b Princess Comedy (Hopeful Comedy—Miss Milly). Mr F. Mitchell’s brd and w b Pretty Rose (Andrew Micawber—First Glance) beat Mr J. Tatham’s f b Waikoura (Hopeful Comedy—Cross Eyes). Mr R. M’Dougall’s brd and w d Royal Saxon (Grand Slam—Zella Mac) beat Messrs M'Pherson Bros.’ f d Ben Hur (Thrilling Chapter—Lady Lou). Second Round. Pretty Rose beat Gipsy’s Warning. Pretty Rose led up by four lengths and scored with a turn. Gipsy’s Warning then turned, but Pretty Rose scored a go-by on the inner and killed. Royal Saxon a bye. t Final. Pretty Rose, 13 points, beat Royal Saxon, 8 point. Pretty Rose led from the slips, but after scoring the first turn she over-ran the hare .on several occasions, allowing her opponent to cut in and gain points. The winner was quick in picking up position again, however, and, scoring on turn after turn, she got the decision. MAIDEN STAKE. (For dogs that have not won more than £5 in any one stake.) First Round. Mrs Cleverly’s brd d Oakland Blue (Grand Slam—Zella Mac) beat Mr T. Lee’s Come Again (Kevansforte —Rose Bloom). Mr E. Kropp’s r d Electric Zella (Electric Mac—Zella Mac) beat Air T. M’Mullan’s br d Lucky O’Flynn (Kevansforte — Rose Bloom). Mr E. Kropp’s blk d Black Duke (Digger—Lady Lou) beat Mr Hair’s br and w d Pretty Free (Tiger Mickey— Royal Anthem). Second Round. Oakland Blue beat Electric Zella. The dogs went neck and neck from the slips, but Electric Zella drew out and chased the game to the escapes. The hare doubled, and, turned by Oakland Blue, ran in a wide circle to get home again. In the final run Oakland Blue piled up a good margin of points and won a fairly easy victory. Black Duke a bye. Final. Oakland Blue, 24 points, beat Black Duke, 18 points. Black Duke led up and after his opponent had scored on two wrenches, he took a wrench and turned to Oakland Blue, which killed, the judge signalling “no course.” On the re-run, Black Duke led up and scored on the first turn. Oakland Blue then took a succession of turns, but Black Duke scored a go-bye, and in a straight run caught the hare, but lost it. Oakland Blue had faded temporarily, but he picked up again, and after a foio run killed near the escapes.
