From the figures dealing with vital statistics in Wellington the fact is deducible (says the Dominion) that the 10 per cent, cut has been applied in a rather unusual way. In May of last year 214 births were registered in Wellington, and last month the number was reduced to 192—within .C of a 10 per cent, reduction. The position is similar with regard to marriage notices, for in May of last year 123 notices were issued, and last month the number was 110, within .7 of a 10 per cent, reduction. Some time ago a Greymouth resident attempted to work out a picture puzzle, for the correct solution of which prizes were offered. He shared the second prize with 187 other competitors, and received as his share Is 4d. After deducting the Is entrance fee and 2d far a stamp, he still shows a profit of 2d.
