The afternoon tea, with savouries and other acceptable eatables, was much appreciated, and following this were one or two brief speeches. The president, Mrs J. J. Clark, presented Mrs Hislop with a shoulder posy of freesias and violets, and assured her of the welcome accorded her by the members, adding that all would be willing to assist her at any time and in any way, if called upon. Mrs Clark hoped that Mrs Hislop’s time as Mayoress of Wellington would be a very happy and prosperous one. In reply, Mrs Hislop spoke of the pleasure
she was experiencing in the warm welcome which she was- receiving on all sides. Sim was glad indeed to know that she had so many friends, and would'get good support if she had need to call upon Wellington women in her capacity of Mayoress, and concluded by saying that she hoped to have many opportunities of meeting them. A brief but very enjoyable programme was then given. Mrs Bernard Mood sang to her own accompaniment, Mrs Lisle sang. with Miss Joan M'Leod as accompanist; Miss Zena Ju"--and a violin solo was played bv Miss Una Castle, and a cello solo by Miss Hill, Miss Z. The After-care Society, which takes kindly heed of the children who belong to the Governmental “ special classes,” both while thev are at school and afterwards. has established a “ Children’s Club ” which meets at the Spiritualist's Hall twice weekly. Recently a special afternoon was arranged for the young ones by;. Mrs H. S. Hadfield (president) and the members of committee. There were games and dancing and a very delectable tea, both for the children and the parents, when bright decorations and coloured boxes of sweets were added pleasures. Some fancy dancing by pupils of Miss K. Haire gave immense pleasure, and the afternoon was a most successful one.
The first entertainment given under the name of the Children’s Theatre took place on Saturday afternoon, and was a successful effort. The attendance was good, both of children and parents, and the programme was a well selected and amusing one. It is hoped that this movement, which originated successfully in London, will be equally successful in the “ Britain of the South.” Mr F. H. Dawn, Mr Douglas Tayler, Miss Dorothj’ Tanner, and others were all instrumental in arranging the items, and' Miss Orini Reid was the pianist. The first item was “ When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” in costume, followed by a quaint old English scena, “ Hoeing Turmuts,” also costumed. A. A. Milne’s pretty play, “ The Princess and the Woodcutter,” came next, and was much enjoyed. Another amusing play, “ Fat King Melon and Princess Carraway,” by A. P. Herbert and Dennis Arundel, was followed by a sea chanty showing how a sailor sings “ Where Are You Going to, my Pretty Maid.” and “ Elizabeth Ellen,” from “ Punch.” Another little play, “ The Armchair,” by Eleanor Fargeon, -with two old English songs, completed an excellent and' varied programme. The next performance will be on Saturday of next week. The fifth staff dance of General Motors (Wellington branch) took place at the Adelphi Cabaret recently, and was a particularly bright and pleasant function. The artistic decorations of the cabaret, with softly shaded lights, and the pretty frocks worn by the dancers, made altogether a charming scene.
