MEMORIAL TOWER ON PUKETAPU HILL. This has been erected in place of the Memorial Cairn which collapsed on top of Pukeviti (further north). h bears the following record on a marble slab:— ERECTED IN MEMORY OF THE HON. SIR JOHN M’KENZIE, K.C.M.G., M.L.C., 1902. Born at Ardross, Scotland, 18th October, 1838; married Annie Munro of Glenglass, 23rd May, 1860. Arrived in Otago 1860; Shepherd at Puketapu 1861 ; farmer, Shag Valley 1865; Clerk and Treasurer Bushey Road Board 1865-8; Provincial Councillor for Waihemo 1871-6, Waikouaiti Councillor 1877, Chairman Waihemo County Council 1882. M.P. for Moeraki 1882; Member of Otago Education Board 1883-6; M.P. for Moeraki 1884; Commissioner Otago Land Board 1 884; Delegate to Sydney Stock Conference 1885; M.P. for Waihemo 1887; M.P. for Waitaki 1890; Minister of Lands and Agriculture and in charge of Land Valuation and Advances to Settlers’ Department and Commissioner of State Forests, 18911900; M.P. for Waihemo 1893-1900 (re-elected unopposed 1899); resigned on account of ill-health 2 7th June, 1900; appointed to Legislative Council of New Zealand 1901 ; created K.C.M.G. 1901 ; died at Heathfield, Palmerston, Otago, 6th August, 1901.
