DUNEDIN FANCIERS’ CLUB
ANNUAL SHOW. EXCELLENT DISPLAY OF BIRDS. The fifty-first annual show of the Dunedin Fanciers’ Club was opened in the Brydone Hall on Thursday. While not up to those of last year, which was the jubilee year, the entries were, on the whole, very satisfactory, and compared well with those of earlier years. In the canaries the entries in the Yorkshire section were somewhat fewer in number than those of last year, but
the judge (Mr C. W. Rix) declared that the quality of the exhibits showed that this class was steadily improving. Ths exhibitors were to be congratulated on the consistency of their breeding to the Dominion standard type. Close competition was the order of the day. The necessity of thoroughly training their Yorkshires for the show bench should be impressed upon exhibitors. The winner of the club trophy in the breeders’ section was a variegated yellow cock with fine position, good in type and feather, and with splendid carriage and exact symmetry. The judge of the Norwich and native birds section (Mr R. J. Brown) said that the show was good numerically, but the standard was hardly up to that of last year. Some good birds were benched which had not been trained, otherwise the awards would have been slightly different. The winner of the trophy for the best bird in the breeders’ section, D. R. Ker’s entry in the plain head cinnamon variegated, yellow or buff class, was an outstanding bird, short in flights and tail, of good type and colour, and possessing plenty of substance. A. H. Waugh s entry in the plain head, buff, clear or invisible ticked section was a clear buff, but showed a looseness of feather. It ran the champion very closely. The Budgerigars were very beautiful and attractive birds, and should appeal to the ladies as a novelty. These birds, Mr Brown said, could be taught to talk when young, and were very amusing and interesting. The goldfinches were a good class, and were hard to separate. Several chaffinches, linnets, and redpolls were also on exhibition. . The judge of the fancy pigeons (Mr L. Nicholson) said that the entries this year wee not quite so good as those ot previous yeans, but there were some good specimens exhibited. The black self tumbler which secured the prize for the best fancy pigeon was a very fine bird. There was an excellent black fantail which was worthy of praise. The bald hens were good, and the fantails weie oi good quality. The judge of the working homer pigeons (Mr W. Watson) said that, though there were not so many entries as last year, the quality of the exhibits was well up to standard, and the birds were equal to anything ever shown at the show. There were particularly good entries in the boys’ classes, both with regard to numbers and quality. All the exhibits were well shown. In the opinion of the judge (Mr A. S. Jarvie) the quality of the exhibits in the poultry section was generally fair.
The Rhode Island Reds and Leghorns were very good, though there was nothing really outstanding. Some of the Minorcas were fair specimens, and the Buffs and White Rocks were similarly described. The Brown Leghorns and Anconas were poor. Some of the exhibits were well shown, but distinct faults were noticeable in many cases. The judge (Mr W. Tibbles) said that the bantams exhibited were all of very fair quality. The entries numbered about the same as last year. There was a good display of modern game, Mr W. K. Bean's exhibits of black-red pullets and duckwing pullets being very creditable. The outstanding exhibit was Mr A. E. Gillam’s pile pullet, which won three specials, including the Hudson Cup for the best marked bird in the show. The black rose-comb classes were all fair. There was nothing outstanding in the Pekin class. The following is the prize-list:— CANARIES NORWICH. Judge: Mr R. J. Brown. BREEDERS’ CLASSES. P.h., yellow, clear or invis. ticked cock. The show was continued in the Brydone Hall on Friday, when the judging in the dogs, cats, and children’s pets was completed. There was a fairly good attendance throughout the day, considerable interest being taken in the dogs, which were the strongest and probably the most popular section represented. The judge (Air H. Hinchcliff) remarked on the good, even standard that had been maintained. He singled out the one bulldog on exhibition, L. A Darrocott’s Armadale .Tony, as the best dog in the show, stating that it was a magnificent specimen of the breed. Cocker spaniels, Irish setters, and English setters we re aH of a very high standard, and Alsatians were also fairly good, although some were hard to handle. Pomeranians with one or two exceptions, were only fair There was a poor entry of fox terriers, while whippets were good. Pointers did not compare so well with other sporting dogs.. The Great Dane was a very nice specimen, well developed for its age. Collies were a strong class and were very even. Sydney Silkies were fairly good in quality, but there were not many entries Retrievers and Samoyedes were only fair The judge of the cats (Air W. Hunt)' said that the exhibits were well benched. The best cat in the show, a neuter blue entered by Aliss Dorothy Glen, was a splendid specimen, the best Jie had seen for a long time. The children’s pets were
well up to standard and he was highly pleased with all the exhibits. Entries in the whole section were about the same as. last.years entries. Mr W. Been, who judged the children’s pets, commented favourably on this display, saying that it was a very good allround exhibit. Entries were about the same as those of last year. A black red pullet was an outstanding bird amom the game, being awarded a first and special, and a white game cockerel gained favourable notice. The following is the prize list:— DOGS Judge: Air H.
