CHRIST’S COLLEGE

THE NEW HEADMASTER Mr R. J. RICHARDS APPOINTED. Mr Reginald James Richards, who has been appointed to the position of headmaster of Christ's College, Christchurch, is a son of the Bishop of Dunedin (Dr Richards), and received his early education at the Lawrence District High School, where he won a scholarship tenable at Christ’s College. He entered the college in 1906. and during the next six years he had a remarkably brilliant career, obtaining nearly every honour which it was possible for a scholar to receive. He was a member of the first cricket eleven and of the first Rugby fifteen for three years, being captain of each in his last year, won the champion cup for athletics for two years in succession. and was captain of the cadets. In addition he was head prefect of the school in 1912. and was awarded the most coveted prize at Christ’s College, the Ormsley Medal, which is given for leadership, and is awarded only in cases of exceptional merit. In 1912 he won a New Zealand University National Scholarship, and entered Canterbury College the following year, where he repeated his earlier sv -cesses. Mr Richards was the college exhibitioner in Greek in 1914. obtained his B.A. degree in 1915. and also won the senior university scholarship in Greek during the same year. He secured his M.A. degree in 1916, with.’ second-class honours in Latin and Greek. 'He also represented Canterbury College in both cricket and athletics, and of the Students’ Association. Mr Richards served in the Great War as a lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and shortly before the signing of the Armistice he was wounded in the throat and taken prisoner. At the conclusion of hostilities he was appointed to a position as a master at Clifton College, England, upon the staff of which he has been for the past 12 years. During this period Mr Richards has had experience as house tutor, house master of the day boy house, officer of 0.T.C., and has been in complete charge of Rugby football in the school. In this connection it may be

mentioned that the Clifton senior fifteen has been particularly successful during the time in which he acted as coach.

Mr Richards married a daughter of Mr F. Luten Carter, senior assistant master at Clifton. He will take up his new duties at Christ’s College at the beginning of the first term of next year.
