WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL

ECONOMY AIEASURES. WELLINGTON, June 5. The Wellington City Council discussed the report of the special Finance Committee set up to reduce the estimates. The committee recommended that the £10,060 required to provide for the relief of unemployment until the end of August should be taken from the profits of the electricity- department; that all salaries and yvages be reduced by 10 per cent, after July 1.

The Alayor (Air T. C. A. Hislop) said he had expected the available income to be £241,000, but on examination it was found they were really- £23,000 behind. Cr R. Semple complained that what was actually a bad debt had been shown as a cash payment and strongly criticised the previous Mayor.

Several councillors protested against the electricity department being raided for unemployment, but the proposal was adopted. The 10 per cent, reduction was also carried, but it is not to apply to married men so as to bring them beloyv £4 in the meantime.

—The amount of interest paid on 5 ceut war loan in England during 1930 was £104,576,000. The amount of this yvar loan still outstanding on December 31, 1930, was £2,087,035,000.
