HOME TRAINING

MODERN GIRL’S INEFFICIENCY. “ I am running an extra class for unemployed girls, and it is not surprising that some of them are unemployed,” said Professor Strong, when speaking to a remit on home science training at the annual conference of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union on Tuesday. “ It is a terrible indictment that girls should go through schools and know as little of housework as these girls know ” she added.

Mrs Jasper Clark said that she thought the young girls in New Zealand were the finest in the world—(applause) — and it was disgraceful that they should go into homes unfitted to carry out their duties.

Another delegate remarked that in tome country schoolgirls got no home science training except sewing. “It is true that the home makers are not training their daughters, and it is left to the schools,” said Professor Strong.

Miss F. Finlayson (organising secretary) remarked that many children in the Fifth and Sixth Standard found it extremely difficult even to peel an apple Some were excellent, and could carry on housework quite well, but for others the schools had to take the responsibility.

“Just now there seem to be two mainthings in Australia —politics and pleasure. I would like to. see a third put in—service, any real service to the country.” This was the final message from Lord Baden-Powell on leaving Adelaide by train for Western Australia the other day. ' '
