WELLINGTON. June 5. It is rather a .curious thing that there has probably never been onite such a successful garrison ball in Wellington before as the one held on the night of the Kings Birthday this year. It was held at the Drill Hall, and there were quite 800 guests present, with a great sprinkling of scarlet and blue uniforms, as the Naval Reserve was well represented, as well as
the Flying Corps. The hall was wonderfully decorated, the energetic committee having spent several nights there with a couple of motor cats polishing the iloor (which was in excellent order), and hundreds of signalling flags were used, covering in the roof, and interspersed with chains of red. blue, and yellow electric lights, mingled with ropes of lycopodium, and having long streamers of coloured crepe paper. The Prisons Department had given permission for greentry to be obtained from Wi Tako Camp, aiid there was a wealth of fern fronds, brown birch, etc., used tastefully round the hall, ami in the artillery hall, where a cabaret supper was set. Lieutenant C. Aleachen was honorary secretary of the dance, and was assisted by an energetic committee. Among those present were Colonel and All's Symon. Colonel Standish. Colonel Saunders, Afajor and Airs Weir. Colonel and Mrs Cunningham, Captain and Airs Gentry, Flight-lieutenant ami Airs Neviil. Major and Mrs Abel, Captain and Airs Steele. Afajor Afauginson (Otago), Captain and Airs Park, Lieutenants APKelvie Gray, A. H. Fear. Woolley, and Smythe,’ and Alesdames J. L. Saunders. Weir Al D. Young, E. G. Pilcher, E. L. Aleachen. and a great many younger peop’e. The reception arranged by the Wellington branch of the Federation of University Women for the new graduates passed off most successfully. The party was held at the Pioneer Club, which was bright and cheery with flowers and fires—the latter acceptable, as the night was cold. Dr Elizabeth Bryson received the guests, and explained the uses of the federation, at home and abroad, and hoped that the new graduates would join and share in the benefits. An acceptable programme was given. Aliss Ellis played a couple of charming piano solos, and Aliss Huntingdon recited. An amusing reading Was given by Aliases Batham, Birnie, Palmer, Afacsenzie and Bell, being a scene from ‘‘ Pride and Prejudice,” by Jane Austen, which all enjoyed immensely. Miss Clark spoke of her nursing experiences among the Alecca pilgrims, sliowing now much had been done of late years to preserve and improve the health of the many thousands of people who made the pious pilgrimage to the tomb of Mahomet at Mecca. She mentioned that it li<id been more possible to cope with them since the processions had been stopped since 192 G, that of the “holy carpet ” being one which drew many thousands cither to take part, or to look on. It had been very difficult to deal with so many people in so short a time. Later hearty thanks were given to the performers and to Alias Clark, and then an. aajuurnment was made to supper, which was served in the club dining room where the tables were arranged tastefully WJvU crystal vases of chrysanthemums. Among those present were Afisses Hetheringtcn, Greig Batham, Irvine-Smith, A Paterson and her sister. Dr Ada Platte-Mills, Mrs G. Watson, Mrs Sinclair, Afisses Ellison, Ardell V Cooper., Prendeville, Afacdonald. ’Pow, Tanner, E. Plank, E. Briggs, Clachan, Cornish Afewhinney, Shallcrass, E. Heine, England. J. Atkinson. Birnie. Afatthews, Collins, Morgan, Wiggins, Stewart, Beckway, and many others. The dance arranged at Queen Afargaret's College by the members of the Old Girls’ Association passed off most successfully there being a large attendance of guests’ who appreciated the good arrangements made by the committee. The classrooms
were arranged and furnished for sittingout, with the welcome addition of large, cheery fires. The hall was the ballroom, and later in the evening much amusement was caused by the letting-go of a number of balloons from the gallery above. Squeakers added much to the noise and fun which went on when all were engaged in trying to catch the balloons. The decorations consisted of bowls of chrysanthemums and greenery artistically bestowed. Supper was a feature, being a home-made one, and the music was excellent, both adding to the enjoyment of the guests. Miss V. Spiller and Air T. R. AFGregor gave an exhibition dance, and Miss Nancy Rabe and partner gave a Spanish dance in costume. The chaperons were Airs Hoby, who was in green chiffon velvet and a Spanish shawl, and Mrs Hamilton, who was in black lace. Others present were Afiss Wallace Smith, Airs A. P. Smith, Airs D. J. Dalgleish, Airs A. Afurie, Aliss AL Cleiglian. Airs Wall, and Misses P. Holm. W. Wallace, S. Hamilton. P. Dawson. E. APKenzie, B. Kersley. Af. Press, R. APLellan, R. Wyllie. B. Afenard. B. Montgomery, AL King, AT. Poole. B. Herbert, E. Hopkirk, B. Hunter. W. Wiltshire, H. Archer. AL Webb. E. Kelly, P. Quirk, S. Bryant, and many more. The opening of the autumn exhibition of the Art Gallery was, as usual, a somewhat crowded function, and the difficulty of getting anything like a “private” view of the pictures was insurmountable. However, the guests all had a very pleasant evening, and something like a guessing competition as to whom the pictures were to be attributed went on. a,s no catalogues were available. However, it certanily added to the interest. Dr Carbery (president) apologised for the absence of the Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop), and said that he? had no choice but to declare the exhibition open himself. He spoke svmpathetically of th e loss by death of Air H. AL Gore, a former president and secretary, whose kindly presence and courtesy was much missed. The loss of the late Hon 1. Sliaiier Weston was also mentioned with regret.
