BIRKETT’S GARAGE FIRE
A SENSATIONAL TURN. ARREST OF A LABOURER. WELLINGTON, May 19. A sensational turn in the Birkett’s garage fire ease occurred with the arrest at 5 o'clock last night of Hilton Herbert Brooks, a labourer, aged 25, by Detective AFLennan. Brooks appeared in court this morning before Mr E. Page, S.M., and was remanded, as asked for by Sub-inspector Ward. Air Leicester, for the accused, said he was a young married man living in Wellington. “ The charge is a grave one, but I am instructed that the police are not opposed to bail,” said counsel. “ Accused has already given the police a certain amount of assistance.” Sub-inspector Ward did not oppose bail, but asked that the amount fixed should be fairly substantial. Mr Leicester: The police are making inquiries which are likely to be rather exhaustive, and it may mean that if he does not get bail he will be remanded in gaol from week to week. Mr Page fixed bail at £5OO and two sureties of £250 each, the accused to report daily to the police. At the eoronial inquiry expert evidence diagnosed incendiarism.
