The beauty and charm of Hawke’s Bay country is never greater than at this time of the year (states the Napier Telegraph). To get away from the chaos and ruin of the city, and motor through the country roads, aglow with gorgeous autumn tints, is indeed refreshing to body and mind alike. Through the valley of the Tutaekuri River, between Puketapu and Hakowai, and then over the hills via Apley station to Rissington,. is a particularly delightful run. The golds and browns and yellows of the poplars and elms are fittingly contrasted with the tender green of the new grass. The sheltered Rissington Valley holds the autumn colours longer than most, and even when the trees are bare in the surrounding country the trees near the new bridge are still ablaze. But even there it is not possible to forget February 3, for cracks and fissures are visible on the hillsides, and great boulders have rolled on to the surrounding paddocks. At one spot a giant rock completely blocks the gateway to a farm.
