CYCLE THIEF’S OPERATIONS
TWO YEARS’ BORSTAL DETENTION. CHRISTCHURCH, May 22. Before the magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley) William Baldock, aged 20 years, was convicted of the theft of 18 bicycles, and was sentenced to Borstal detention for two years. Sub-inspector O’Hara said that the accused was the son of a South Canterbury farmer. It was his system to steal bicycles from the street and take them to dealers, where he sold them. The accused also used fictitious names. In Timaru the accused stole six bicycles, and, coming to Christchurch, he stole 12 more cycles, and for 11 obtained £lO 15s from dealers. “ The accused had evidently thought the whole matter out,” said the subinspector, “ and was very cunning.”
