PEDIGREE STOCK

NEED FOR NEW BLOOD EMBARGO AGAINST IMPORTATION. BLENHEIM, May 21. A Marlborough Express reporter this afternoon sought the opinion of Mr F N. Dillon, who has just returned to Bien heim after a lengthy period of residence in England on the question whether the embargo on the importation of pedigree stock into New Zealand should be lifted. Mr Dillon said he would no t venture to advise farmers on the subject, but he personally did not think there was much to be feared from lifting the embargo. He knew that foot-and-mouth disease was a very dire thing, but control in England was extremely strict, and very special precautions were taken with it. He did not think the Dominion could go on much longer without importing fresh blood from England, as it had never been possible to find a satisfactory substitute for English sires. Provided that adequate care were observed in the selection and quarantining of stock both in England and New Zealand, he did not believe there would be serious risk in letting English stock into the country.

An Order-in-Council has been issued under the Chartered Associations (protection of names and uniforms) Act, 1930, consequent upon the application of the Girl Guides’ Association. In addition to affording protection for the badges worn with and without uniform the Order-in-Couneil also protects the following designations used by the association: — “Brownie,” “Girl Guide,” “Sea Guide,” “ Sea Ranger.” “ Ranger Guide,” “Air Guide,” “Air Ranger,” “ Lone Guide,” “ Post Guide,” “ Guider,” “ Brown Owl,” “ Tawny Owl,” “ Eagle Owl,” and “ Laughing Owl.”
