DUNEDIN GARDENING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Banedin Gardening Club -was held in the TaI.C.A. on Tuesday evening, the president (Mr F. H. Hollingworth) presiding over a large attendance of members. The annual report stated that the membership was still quite satisfactory. The increase in new members was good, buta number of old members had not come forward. This was accounted for by the slump, and also by too much repetition in the syllabus year by year. It was hoped that both of those, causes would be removed this year. The attendance at the meetings had been good, and keen interest had been maintained in the lectures, etc. Several members continued to

be exhibitors at the horticultural shows with marked success. The meeting had been brightened up by the exhibits of plants and flowers by members. These were of great assistance both to members and to the finances of the club. Thanks were due to those who exhibited and to those who gave their gardens for demonstrations. The report closed with a comprehensive vote of thanks to those who had assisted the club durin" the year.

The balance sheet showed receipts amounting to £22 17s 9d and expenditure totalling £2l 2s, leaving a credit balance of £1 15s 9d.

In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the chairman sam the chib had been formed with the idea of attempting to improve the gardens in and around the city, and not with any purpose of making money out of its activiV- eS i thought that the position, as disclosed by the report, was therefore one with which they had every reason to be satisfied.

The motion was seconded by Mr E A. Hamel, who said that he had found in going round the city that a very large number of people was receiving a great deal of benefit from the lectures which were given during the year under the auspices of the club. He thought that if the matter of arranging the syllabus were gone into and lectures of a more interesting and practical nature were delivered the results would be even better. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. * The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr F. H Hollingworth; vice-presidents—Messrs J. Passmore. J. H. Vicker, J. Whyte, W. Blackburn. J. Roy, Misses Anderson and Robertson, Mesdames Rodger and Orr Campbellsecretary, Mr P. Nelson; Messrs E. A. Hamel. R. More, J Nelson. M. Thomson, J, W. MTntyre, A. C Wilson, W. Walker. A. Rissman, Mesdames Boodeward, Ho'lingworth. Rhodes. Brownlie, Sanderson, Misses Burgess, Nolan, K,ader ; MTntyre, and M’Ewan. At the conclusion of the annual meetan a «dress was given by Mr W B MEwanon “The Early History of Dunedin. Mr M'Ewan dealt with his subject, of which he showed himself to be the master, in a very interesting manner, while additional interest was lent to his remarks by the lantern slides by which they were accompanied. Fully 100 of these were shown depicting Dunedin as it was in those years of her youth, when the march of prosperity and progress had not yet established a flourishing city and when the whole aspect of the town was considerably different, perhaps some would say even more beautiful, than it is to-day. At the conclusion Mr M’Ewan received a hearty vote of thanks for his address.
