AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. LONDON, May 20. A startling rout of the favourites marked the fifth round of the amateur golf championship. Roper Clerk, who learnt golf as a coal miner, and who is a first class discovery, defeated Voigt by one hole amid cheers. Tulloch similarly accounted for Wethered. Tippet beat Tolley 3 and 2. Other survivors are Morrison, De Forest, Smith, Miller and M'Cormack (the ex Irish champion). LONDON, May 21. D e Forest, in the sixth round of the Amateur Golf Championship, defeated Roper, 2 and 1; and in the semi-final defeated Tulloch, 1 up. Smith defeated Miller, 2 and 1, and M’Cormack 1 up. DEFEAT OF THE FAVOURITES. RUGBY, May 21. In the Amateur Golf Championship on Westward Ho links John De Forest and Martin Smith, of the Royal St. George’s Club, reached the final. De Forest is Surrey champion, and Martin Smith gets his Cambridge University golf blue this year. All the foreign entrants, including the much-fancied American, George Voight, were defeated in the earlier rounds. The championship was marked throughout by surprise defeats of the favourites. Despite American and other foreign challengers there will be an All-English final between the two youngest players ever to reach this stage. De Forest is 24 and Martin Smith 22

AVON BY MARTIN SMITH. LONDON, May 22. In the amateur championship final Martin Smith beat de Forest, 1 up. Smith got his Cambridge University golf blue this year, and de Forest is champion of Surrey. A YOUTHFUL CHAMPION. LONDON, May 22. Martin Smith is among the youngest of champions. He is the son of a wellknown golfer. He entered at the last minute for the fun of a week’s golfing, and was not expecting success. He was 4 up at the twenty-first. De Forest, fighting magnificently, squared at the thirty-first. A thrilling match ended by halving at the thirty-sixth. De Forest is a son of Baron de Forest, an ex-international golfer. PROFESSIONAL TOURNAMENT. LONDON, May 22. In the third round Lacey beat Gadd, 3 —2, and Barber beat C. Whitcombe, 1 up; E. Whitcombe beat W. Davies, 4 and 2; Manero beat Allies, 4 and 3. In the semi-finals Barber beat Lacey, 3 and 1, and E. Whitcombe beat Manero, 2 and 1. WHITCOMBE AVINS THE FINAL. LONDON, May 23. Whitcombe defeated Barber at the thirty-ninth hole. LEEDS, May 24. The final was played in drenching rain. Both players were brilliant. AA’hitcombe’s victory was due to his driving. QUEENSLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. BRISBANE, May 22. H. R. Sinclair won the open golf championship of Queensland by five strokes in the play-off with C. Brown. ST. CLAIR CLUB. The second round of the St. Clair Golf Club championship and junior cup resulted as follows:— Club Championship.—C. B. Wight defeated W. Clayton, 1 up; J. A. Scouler defeated D. C. Bennie, 2 and 1; J. E. Matheson defeated F. Duthie, 7 and 5; H. A. Gamble defeated A. Lawrence, 1 up. Junior Cup.—G. North defeated H. S. Ross, 1 up; AV. G. Aitken defeated J. Mardon, 1 up; AV. D. M'Kenzie defeated J. Hart, 9 and 8. A Smellie and H. Aitken have yet to play off. The Four-ball Bogey Handicap, which was also played, resulted in a tie, no fewer than five pairs returning cards of 6 up:—W. Shepherd and P. Seelye 6 up, C. J. Wood and G. M'Gregor 6 up, H.
