MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the High Schools Board of Governors was held on ednesday afternoon, and was attended by the chairman (Mr J. C. Stephens), Mrs lark Archdeacon Fitchett, Dr Marshall Macdonald, Mr D. T. Fleming, M.L.C., Messrs W. R. Brugh, and J. J. Mallard. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. May 5, at the Municipal Baths, tiie school championship being won by Clarice Lang. Great interest was taken in the production of original plays and sketches for the May meeting of the Musical and Dramatic Club. Nineteen plays were written and of these 10 were selected for performance on the evenin'* of May 1. They were all very creditable”, and a large proportion were really ingenious and amusing. Morrell) reported that the total number of boys upon the school IpL on c the last day of the term was (06, ot whom 277 were senior, 479 junior and 10 paying pupils. The corresponding totals for Mav, 1926-30, were respectively 666, 699, 711, 721, and 703. ihe annua] swimming sports, held at the Municipal Baths on Friday, April 24 elicited very keen competition, and the level of the performance was hi"h The contest for the Robertson Shield” (school championship) was remarkably close. G. K. Geddes again winning, with record times in the 50 yards (27 2-ssec), 100 yards (62 4-ssec). and 200 yards (2min 3- l-ssec), in each case by a small margin over W. J. Jarvis, who also beat the previous record for the 50 and 100 yards. In the junior championship also there was a good contest, A. J. Mackintosh scoring a creditable win with 16 points and E. K. oimkin coming second with 10 The senior relay race was won by Vb and the junior relay by EVa. On Anzac Day, April 2a, the school cadet battalion, under Major Matt, M.C.. paraded in full strength, except for train boys, etc. for the commemoration service at the soldiers’ memorial. Queen’s Gardens, and also supplied the firing party. The total strength was 12 officers and 651 cadets. On Monnr the kind invitation of the Royal Male Choir Committee, a party ot boys attended and much enjoved the concert given by the choir in the Town Hall. Another party attended the display of views of mountain scenery in Otago given under the auspices of the Otago section of the Alpine Club. This also was much enjoyed. On Monday. Maj’ 4, through the courtesy of the Uliamber of Commerce, some 140 boys attended an interesting lantern lecture hy Mr ill Lawson, given under the chambers auspices, on the commercial mdustria l and social life of the East. The report was adopted. VISITING COMMITTEE.
The report of the Visiting Committee, detailing the visits made to the schools during the month and its recommendations in respect of various repairs was also adopted.
EARTHQUAKE RELIEF. The chairman stated that the pupils of the Boys and Girls’ High Schools had curing the past term been contributing irom their pocket money towards the relief of distress caused by the Hawke’s Bay earthquake. At its last meeting, the board decided that the funds collected in this manner should bs used for the pupils of Napier Boj r s’ and Girls High Schools, the idea being that the money should be used for the purchase of clothing and books, for which the board had been assured there would be a need when the winter set in. A cheque for a further £2B had been forwarded to the secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board (Mr G. Dunn), who, in conjunction with Miss D. M. Arthur, principal of the Napier Girls’ High School, and the rector of the Napier Boys’ High School (Mr hoster), had agreed to administer the fund. In all £33 0s lOd had been forwarded to Hawke’s Bay as a result of tlie appeal to the boys and girls, and letters expressing warm thanks had been received from Messrs Dunn and Foster and Miss Arthur.
GENERAL. Miss Flora M. Allan reported that she had paid over to the principal of the Girls High School the balance of the Wilson Memorial Fund (£ll 8s) for inclusion in the Wilson Prize Fund.—Received, An application from the Basket Ball Union for the use of the lawn tennis court” at the Girls’ High School, subject to conditions laid down by the principal the school. A letter was received from the director of education approving of the rector’s aplication for permission to engage a qualified student as demonstrator in certain science classes for four or five hours per week. —Received. It was decided to grant permission to M. Paul Saldaigne to stage a marionette play in the hall of the Girls’ High School, providing that the performance did nob affect the question of rating or license. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £2786 6s 10d were passed for payment.
