WOODEN HOTELS

QUESTION OF SAFETY MEASURES. WELLINGTON, May 22. The superintendent of the Fire Brigade at a meeting of the Fire Board to-day said the fire escapes at the Panama Hotel were adequate. The trouble was that the occupants did not use them, but lost their heads and jumped. The last person saved was Airs Hyde. She had the sense to wait until the brigade could rescue her by ladder and she was unhurt. Those who jumped were injured. The board decided to obtain a special report on the wooden hotels in Wellington. “ Some are built only of scrim and paper,” remarked one member.
