SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS

EXCELLENT RECITAL ON SATURDAY. An excellent musical recital of a varied and comprehensive nature was given in the Bristol concert chamber on Saturday evening by the Society of Musicians of Otago. There was a large audience, and the efforts of the performers were received with well-merited applause. A performance of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in A flat major, by Miss Thelma Gemmell, proved a delightful introduction to the recital, whilst Hr David Blair gave excellent interpretations of Handel’s “ I Rage, I Melt, I Burn,” and “Arise, Ye Subterranean Winds” (Purcell). Excellent pianoforte items were also given by Miss Ruth Moore (Howell’s “ Procession”), Miss Edna Dry (Liszt’s “ Gnomenreigen ”), Miss Alice Wilson (Lindow’s “Barcarole”), and Mr Frank Crawley (Brahms’s Rhapsodic in G minor). Signor Giovanni Stella was in very fine voice, and presented “ Lamento ” (Tosti) with inspiring effect, whilst Signorina Graziella Rossi won all hearts with her performance of “ Elsa’s Dream,” from “Lohengrin.” A violin solo, Handel’s “Sonata in A major,” by Mr Maitland M‘Cutcheon, completed a delightful programme. In the case of the vocal numbers by Signor Stella and Signorina Rossi accompaniments were provided by Signora Martinelli-Reggiardo, Miss Anna Briasco, Mr J. W. Stewart, Mr P. J. Palmer, and Mr A. George, Mr C. A. Martin also playing the accompaniment for Mr M“Cutcheon.
