OLD LAW INVOKED

AORANGI’S CREW INDIGNANT. AUCKLAND, May 18. When the Aorangi reached Honolulu ♦from Vancouver the Customs officials, invoking an old law, refused a permit to any member of the crew to land until lie had undergone a rigorous medical examination. For 12 years the crew has been allowed ashore and there is no restriction on ships on the northern voyage. The crew’s delegates interviewed an official who remained adamant, with the result that of the ship’s company of 350 only six went ashore, and those on official business. The crew refused on principle to submit themselves to the new examination, although willing as usual to undergo the same examination as passengers. On arrival yesterday the members of the crew were indignant and expressed the view that the action of America was another in the trade war.
