WHEAT AND FLOUR DUTIES
GOVERNMENT’S NEW SCALE. CHRISTCHURCH, May IS. It is the intention of the Government that the new scale of wheat and flour duties, to come into force next season, will give a return to wheat growers of 4s Gd a bushel on trucks at country stations for Tuscan wheat, for February and March delivery. This was made clear by the Prime Minister (Air G. W. Forbes) in replying to a deputation this morning. Representatives of the growers, accompanied by members of Parliament, waited on Air Forbes with the request that the scale of duties should be altered so that the growers will be assured of a return of 4s 9d a bushel. They also asked that the date when the new duties come into force be altered from February 1 to February 28. The Prime Alinister was firm in his refusal to entertain any suggestion that the return of 4s 6d a bushel to growers should be increased to 4s 9d. He promised consideration to the request that the duties be delayed coming into force for a month.
