CANTERBURY MARKETS.

CHRISTCHURCH GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET. {Lytelton Times, September 11.) The grain market remains extremely quiet, and the business that is being done is of a hand-to-mouth description. Tho quantity of wheat on offer is very limited, and supplies are being gradually absorbed. The amount that has been placed on offer in Canterbury during the last few days has been exceptionally small, and in most cases holders have insisted on prices which are much above- buyers' limits, and few parcels have changed hands. Considerable parcels are reported to have changed hands in the south at prices slightly below those current in North Canterbury. For oats' there is rather a firmer feeling in the market, apparently due to the limited amount offered. Holders on the whole are anything but anxious to dispose of their stocks at the prices which are nowcurrent, and during th© last few days few sales have been made. Potatoes continue to be in fair request, especially Derwents, and this variety commands prices up to £3 5s for first-cl£ss samples. A fair amount of grass seed is still being railed to the country, but the volume of business is considerably smaller than is usual at this season of the year. Very few srain transactions have been reported during the week. Sellers of wheat are still asking more than buyers will give, and business is restricted. * The tone of the market for oats is depressing, and values are receding. Quotations are : — Wheat, nominal; Garton oats Is 5d and Is s^d. duns Is 4J>d and Is sd, sparrowbills Is 5d and Is s£d.
