BURGLARS CAPTURED.

AUCKLAND, September 7. Shortly after 7 o'clock this evening a man named William Miles, otherwise known a« " German," about 35 years of age, was arrested in the office of the Auckland Tramways Co. on a charge of burglary. The caretaker of the building, Richard E. Lewis, and his wife, were engaged in cleaning the second floor of the office, and heard a noise downstairs. They at- first took no notice of it, but afterwards heard someone opening and shutting drawers. On coming downstairs Miles rushed from behind a counter on the second floor, and Lewis immediately closed with him. A severe struggle followed, during which Lewis had his shirt torn off his back, besides receiving several nasty blows. However, he managed to get the better of tbe intruder, and handed him over to Constable Cleave, who wae called upon the scene by Mrs Lewis. Miles effected an entrance through a small window, but did not obtain any spoil.

CHRISTCHURCH, September 7. The gueste in Waaner's Hotel had a rather startling experience this morning at aJiveaxly hour. An enterprising burglar, who ascended by means of the fire escape, visited several rooms and levied toll on the valuables of the sleepers. In one, however, the " intended victim was awakcsed by the entrance of the burglar and tackled him. A rough and tumble ensued, the guest calling lustily for help. The night porter, the manager of the hotel, and some others were quickly on the spot sad the police were telephoned for. On their speedy arrival the burglar was headed over, and subsequanily, on pleading " Guilty ... to-day, he was - sentenced to six mouths' imprisonment. He had made a fairly good collection from the rooms visited by him.

It is reported that tuie, which ore in the lie* of absolutely protected native birds, have been shot recently in pieces of bush on the Port Hills, near Christchurch. Tha matter has been reported to the police authorities, who are looking for the offendera.
