EXPLOSION OF GAS.
CHRISTCHURCH, September 12. ' A loud explosion in Messrs P. Hayman and Co.'s warehouse caused considerable sensation in Hereford street' about 9 o'clock this morning. It appears that when Mr Hayman entered the shop he noticed a strong smell of gas, and on opening the strong room door th« smell became more pronounced, and M? Hayman struck a match to investigate. Almost immediately a terrific report ocrurrtd and a sheet of flame momentarily enveloped Mr Hayman. He was thrown, violently backward, but luckily was nob 1 rendered unconscious. His face and hands vrert, rather badly burned, and he sustained a very severe shock. Some idea of the force of the explosion may bo obtained from the fact that the back door of the warehouse, which is about 12ft away from the strong room, was shattered into fragments, a new door, having to be put in. About sft in fron*l of the strong room is a showcase, whicl( was badly scorched by the shtet of flame.
