NOTES. (a) Toxxasch played B-Q 3, and afterwards P-K B 4, •gainst Tchigorin at Hastings. (b) This is oomenhai weak, but it prevent a P x B P. followed by P-Q Xt 4. (c) Emphasising the weakness of the White Xt P, and also opening a file which might be useful later. (d) P-Q 5 looks tempting, for if then 16 P x P, X R-K 1; 17 Q-Q 2, B-B 5, and Black wins the Queen. But there were possible complications, and Black's more patient method is no less effective. (z) Of no avail, but White had a bad game in any case. (r) Threatening Kt-B 5. and if Q-Q 2. Xt x B eh, P x Kt. B x Xt, and mate could only be prevented by giving up the Queen. fo) A pretty finish to an excellent game. <H) If R-R 3, R-Q 8 eh would still win, for after Q x R, Q-B 7 eh and P-K 7. (b) Pretty; to make room for {he B at B 3. (c) Fine; to prevent P-Q 3, and so allow P x R P. It also threatens the sacrifice «f the Queen at R 5. (d) White announced mate in eight moves.
