CHESS MATCH.
DUNEDIN v. TIMARD". A match by telegraph between the Dunedin and Timaru Chess Clubs was commenced on Saturday night with 13 players aside. Mr J. L. Flint umpired for Timaru and Mr J. CoKins for Dunedin. The local team won the toss and elected to have first move at the edd-numbered boards. The names of the players and of the openings adopted are as follow: — Bow-a I.— R. A. Cutnberi (T.). Irregular opening. Although the contest proceeded steadily for nearly four hours, none of the games was finished. At Board 5 Mr Ellis nearly jeopardised his queen by an over-impetuoua attack. With careful play, however, the Dunedin representative may emerge .scathlesfl. At Board 2 Mr Mara has a knight well posted at K6, but, his opponent (Mr Forsyiih) Kas^his rooks strongly opposed to the Timaru player's king's side. At Board 9 Mr Dunlop is a pawn up, and his adversary (Mr Wood) has two isolated pawns. At < 'Board 11 the. Rev. ■Mr Chodowski has con- ! triv«d. to double Mr Bur ford's pawns. At Board 12 Mr Mouat yields np rook for bishop, and retains a. pawn advantage. The ; other games had not reached a decisive* -stage when, at 11.30 p.m., the- match was adjourned until next Saturday at 7 p.m. The telegreph operators (Messrs F. W. Pool* and A. F. Fraser) transmitted the moves .faultlessly and with expedition.
