FIRES
AUCKLAND, September 10. A fire at Newmarket gutted the upstairs portion of the store and residence owned by Mr W. Morgan, and occunied by Lindsay Bros. Only the upstairs portion was destroyed, but the grocery stock was considerably damaged by water. Three girls and a boy had to escape by means of an upstairs window and the verandah. GISBORNE, September 10. A fire at Gladstone road damaged the sljpp occupied by Mr Ferguson (confectioner). The promptitude of the brigade and a good supply of water prevented a serious outbreak. Insurances : Stoclc, £100 in the Guardian, and £1300 on the block (which includes four chops). CHRISTCHURCH; September 10. A nine-roomed house at Sumner, owned by Mrs E. White and occupied as a boarding-house by Miss Campbell, was destroyed by fire this morning. The building was insured for £400, and the furniture for £100, both in the National office. The house was temporarily unoccupied, a building contractor being engaged in adding three rooms and a bathroom. It is understood that the contractor had not covered his risk, which was valued at £250.
