September 11.—With the exception of a storm on Tuesday, lovely weather is being experienced. Farmeas are all busy getting tie crops in. Personal.—Mr G. A. Piper (district railway traffic superintendent) and Mr Brebner (traffic manager) visited Queenstown during the week.—Mr G. N. Morris, clerk in the Queeasfown Court, has received notice of Oria *ransfer to W«fiing>ton. Durriog Mr Morris's stay in- Queens-town he has proved himself a good citizen, having been, a most enthusiastic membeir of .the Temmia and Football Clubs, while ac secretary of the Queenstown Regatta Olub-his place will be uasrd to fill. In Tiis official capacity he was a. most courteous and obliging officer. The -transfer cleans promotion. Mr J. M. Mifier, of Jibe Cromwell office, takes Mr Morris's pl^ce at Queenstown. —Mr and Mrs H. N.'JFirih and family, who have heen Tesidsmt $n Queenstowin for many years, airo leaviag shortly for Wellington, where Mr JSrth\has secured an .appointxnent.—Mar jViliian? I*ynoh*jvrho is leaving the district to- take over a* hotel at Hyde, was entertained o$ *. banquet at ,Arthur's Point last w«ek. £.A. presentation;;-which took the-form of Vamoker's eqrapanion and •umbrella, was made to Mr Lynch by the iArthor's Point Sports Oiub, of which body lie was- an enthusiastic member for many yeais. Entertainment.—A very excellent «ntertainment was given by the members of the Arrow Glee Club, under the comductorsbip of the Rev. H. Packs, m the Arrow Athenseum Hall last evening. A very lengthy and varied programme was submitted, anJ the liberal applause was unmistakable proof of the public's appreciation of the several items. The attendance was very large —a record house, I understand, for Arrowtown —the sum of £26 being taken at the doors. From the first to the concluding item the performers showed evidence of careful training, and the Rev. H. Packe is to be congrotalated on the eucoees of his efforts. A short dance was held after the entertainment, Mr S. M'Skimming being MC. Fatal Accident.—A very sad fatal accident ocounred ait Moonlight on Sunday last. A man named Michael Ryan left Queenstown on Sunday morning for the purpose of inspecting the Moonlight No. 2 <-!eim and race. As he did not return that night search parties went out on Monday morning', and the body of the unfortunate man was found at the foot of a cliff over 200 ft high. He had evidently missed his footing while walking along the racy Death would, no doubt, be instantaneous, and as deceased's watch had stopped at , 2.45 p.m., the accident probably occurred at that time. ■ The body was taken, to Queeratown- on Monday, and an inquest was nebd befove- Coroner Hotop, when a verdict -of, accidental death was returned. The la^e Mr Ryan was 52 years of age, and a native of' New Zealand. He was a married man. and leaves a wife and family who reside- in the. North Island. He had been in, Queenfltowii for about four months, be ing employed at the Mountaineer Hotel. iWihat makes the event sadder is the fact that deceased was inspecting the claim in the interests of his sops, whom he 3*& intended to work the claim if the conditions were favourable. Proposed Sanatorium.—The members of ihe Southland Hospitals and C. A. Board wHI accompany Dr Valfntine, Inspeotorgeneral of Hospitals, on a visit to Queenstown eat tfcte 29th Sejptembeo- with Lhe -object of considering the proposal to establish a sanatorium foi Southland in the Lakes District. Wakati-pu Licensing: Committee.—The -quarterly meeting was" held at Queenstown on Tuesday last, and was attended by Mr H. A. Young, S.M. (chairman), Messrs A. Ford and P. de la Perrelle. The police reported that tha repairs to the hotel at Glenorchy and hotels at Arrowtown were ■being completed. Transfers were granted of the Queerobury Inn from Mary Sachtler to J. W. Penriam, and of the Nevis Hotel from J. M'Loughlin to J. Robertson. An application for a transfer of tho Glenorchy Hotel from Thomas Wilson to James Wil«on was withdrawn. The police of Waikaia (reported adversely on the cemduot of the Commercial Hotel. Constable Herlihy ai> peared in support of the objections, and Mr W. Inder, ot Gore, ap.pea.red for tihe proprietor. After hearing both sides, the committee found that it Sad not been proved ■that the hotel had been improperly conducted.
