BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL
The following is the report for the month of August presented by tbs» engineer (Mr Alex. Nelson at the last meeting of the council : —
Roads. — Owing to the continued wet _ weather the unmet a lied roads are in a tery muddy state for traffic, and in some portions the metal led roads have suffered, the surface being coveied with water. Work?. — Ihe works on hand are at a standstill owing to the wet sta.te of the ground The formation on road Hilknd to Mount Stuart has been stopped in the meantime. The metalling of portion of road at Blackburn was finished early in themonth. And the formauon of road at Waitting's, Wangaloa, is now completed. The works on centre drain, Inchclutha, are now completed up to Lawson's cross road, and a new concrete pipe culvert has been put down at the cross road in place of the one that had given way. An embankment has been raised on side of auxiliary drain from j river to District road xintil the box culvert and sluice box can be repaired The road known as Lakeside road to Parker's is in a very bad stale for the traffic. This road runs through a deep swamp and the drainage al same 13 completely blocked up with grass and weed?, sa that the road in place* is covered! with water. I would recommend that adeeper drain be cut on the high side of the road to 'ake the surface water to the Matau main drain instead of opening the drain in the d.rcction of the lake. Along with Cr Bell
I examined the road at Taieri Beach co* plained of by Messrs Meadows and Yorston, Some years ago this road was used in ruling timber from the bush down to a landing at the river. Since the bush traffic stopped, the track has been overgrown by manuka scrub, aud in some places it is difficult to walk through, and we recommend that the slim of d£6 be expended in clearing a sledge* track through the scrub to a. width of 10ft that would meet with the requirements of the case in the meantime. The toad leading; into Duthie's sections at Helensbrook has been formed to a width of 30ft, and * cuiverfl put down where it joins the Main road, A. supply of maintenance metal h*e been laitl down on portions of the roads in the Matau» Crichton, Mount Stuart, Tokomairiro, and Clarendon Ridings, where the roads were getting rutted and worn through by the .affic. Crs Clark, Boyd, Haggart, and myself •went down to the creek between the lakes ■whore Mr Morrison was working a machine of his own construction -cutting- -the grass out of the creek. We were so favourably, impressed with 'the work done that we authorised Mr Moriison to expend the sunn of j£2o in clearing the creek of the grasses and weeds, and the work is under progress at every favourable opiortunity. The report was adopted.
