While two lads were angling in the Havelock River one hooked an eel so large that he had to call upon his companion to assist in landing it. The eel was found to be 4ft 7in in length and 14Jin in circum- ] ference, while it weighed 231b 4oz. It is interesting- to note that this exceptionally large eel was caught in a spot much frequented by bathers. HOCKEY CHRISTCHURCH, !^ept<>rnber 8. The Canterbury Hockey Association tonight decided to issue a challenge to the Wellington team, the present shield -holders, for a match to be pla-sed early next season. WELLINGTON, September 7.
