THE KENNEL.

By Terror. P*ncJ«r« and breeders of dogs are cordially inrit*d to contribute to this column. " T«rr<»r " will endeavour to make this department as interesting and up-to-date as possible, but in order to do tun h« must hare co-operation of his readers, henc« he trusts this invitation will be chjerlally responded to. ' — The twenty-thir.l annual show of the Wellington Kennel Club is reported as the largest and most successful that the club has held. The bulldogs and fox terriers were specially good, and in many classes numerously represented. The Mayor (Dr A. K. Newman), in opening the show, said that perhaps he was the first Mayor of Wellington who was a dog fancier. Shows, he said, were to be commended for the competition they created. They had the effect of improving the standard of dogs, and if there were no- competitons there would be a tendency for dogs to degenerate into mongrels. The show was also useful for bringing fanciers together and creating a good feeling amongst them. Messrs Janson and Clarke got the Citizens' challenge trophy (value £15 15s) for the best Irish terrier dog with Lurgan Looney. A deerhound took the trophy for the best dog in the show, and Mr Percy Smith's pointer, Bylands Spray, got in for the best bitoh in the show. Mr F. E. Watabn's Greenstone got the British Bulldog Club's trophy for best dog in open class, Mrs A. E. Evans's Sheffield Iris for best bitch. The best puppy went to Mr R. Bailey's Bill Bailey, which also got the trophy in the novice class, and the best puppy bitch proved to be Mrs A. E. Evans's Sheffield Iris. Neill and Rennie's Roslyn Kennels (Napier) about scooped the pool in the collie classes, but our old friend J. G. Parker got first in puppies (dogs), second in open dogs, second in New Zealand-bred dogs, and third in puppies under 12 months. Mr A. Begg's Canto got second in puppy dogs, third in open dogs, third in New Zealand-bred dogs, and his Campanella got second in puppy bitches, v.h.c. in open bitches, and. third in New Zealand-bred bitches. Harper 2. — " Standard," Weekly Times, Melbourne, says: "The whippet, fox, and Irish terrier racing at the Exhibition on August 21 was very interesting. The sport was somewhat novel. When the public gains an insight into the methods of running it will no doubt become more popular. Amongst the performers, Captain Cook (whippet) and Lord Nelson (whippet) showed tremendous speed." — Princes Toussoun, an Egyptian, sold to Mr A. G. Vanderbilt, the well-known millionaire an>d owner of the "Venture" and "Vfking" coaches, her Pekingese dog Elsworthy Khedive at a price which works out at over £3 per ounce. The dog weighs between 71b and Blb. Thees- minute dogs, • ttle sacred dogs of China, are at present most valuable, and for Champion Chu-erh of Alderbourne M<rs Ashton Cross recently •refused £1500. — We are often asked (says Our Dogs) to give ad vied in cases of milk trouble, which, of course, generally occurs when a bitoh has lost her puppies ; and tihere is no complaint of our dumb friends that is more deserving- of sympathetic treatment than this. Some cf these cases arise from loss of puppies by death from some disease or accident, and there are other cases which are tho result of sheer cruelty. The man who would take all the puppies away from their mother suddenly and wilfully run the risik of Musing the mother suffering and pain, and perhaps death, deserves to be treated as though he belonged to the wife-beating class, for it is only a question of a different degreeof cruelty, and there is no excuse whatever for doing t.hia sort of thing. But we- will leave th& sentimental aspect, and deaJ. with the surgical and medicinal. The effect of. a : sudden loss of puppies is, of course, io bring on serious inflammation, and tumours will form, which require very serious surgiI oal treatment. Anyone possessed of the ! slightest amount of xmimonaense will realise this, and it will be obvious that in any case in which, from circumstances beyond the owner's control, a bitch is deprived of ht-r puppies it will be absolutely necessary Lo'take artificial means of drawing away the milk co that inflammation 'and all its attendant ■onsequenoes can be avoided. At the sai»B time, steps must be taken' to check th,. w formation of milk, if possible, and this can be done by giving brisk aperients, by reducing the diet, and by., the use of a suitable ointment. Lanoline bas been recommended for this pu-rpose, and probably a combination of that -with ointment of belladona will be as suitable an application as can I>a suggested. Anj qualified chemist will understand how to make up in the proper form and of the- correct strength if tba purpose for which, it is re-quh-ed is clearly explained to him. Should such a misfortune as ar abscess occur it will be necessary to apply hot fomentations and poultices, and this treatment will have to ba continued, and probably will need to be followed by the use cf the surgeon's knife. Anyway, .in such a case as that, it will be much batter from every point of view to obtain the services of the nearest veterinary surgeon — or if no veterinary surgeon can be at hand, a case like this is one which can ba treated by the ordinary family medical practitioner if h( cares to attend to it, as no doubt he will be pleased to do if he be a humane- man. After recovery the animal will need a good l course of tonics, and probably nothing will be more satisfactory than a mixture of cod liver oil and quinine, which is obtainable in the form of gelatine capsules, and the effect of which will be, not onJy to tone up the whole system, but also to enable her to put on flesh again, for she is certain to be in a % a-ry weak, reduced condition.
