OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS ASSOCIATION.

The monthly committee meeting of the above association was held on Monday afternoon in the Board Room of the Early Settlers Hall ; there being present : Messrs Donald Reid (in the chair), W. Crawley, C. Duke, F. Somerville, John Duthie, G. C. Proudfoot (hon. treasurer), J. Wood (secretary), and Dr Will. Apologies were received from Messrs W. Barron, John Reid, J. H. Walker, and J. Louden. Votes of thanks were passed as follows: To Mr W. Chalmers, for eight miners' rights of the early sixties and for an enlarged photo, of Mr J. W. Allen, photographer, in Dunedin in the early sixties ; to Mr D. Harris Hastings, for a copy of the programme of proceedings on the occasion of the laying the foundation stone for the Exhibition, 1889-1890. printed on white satin, and framed; to Mr A. H. Ross, Manawatu, Wellington, for 114voluines of the proceedings of Otago Provincial Counoil, Invercargill Provincial I Council. House of Representatives, Legislative Council, a.nd Harbour Board, from | 1854- to 1890 — a very valuable coHeotion of early r*wsords; to Mrs John M'Lean, Orepuki, for book dated 1808, an engraving of the late Queen Victoria, a bone sailmaker's rubber; to Mrs Hamilton, Palmerston, for one penny, minted in the reign of Georgo 111, a medal won at a Tima.ru show (won by George Grey Russell's exhibit), a medal of the opening of the International Exhibition of 1851, medal commemorating the Duke and Duchess of York's visit, 1901 ; to J. Niven, for fa- medal of the International Exhibition, Sydney, New South Wales, 1879, also a token of 1801; to Mis George Matthews, Hawthorn avenue, Mornjpgton, for a box made by Mr John Hill in the early fifties for Mr George Matthews, as treasurer of the First Church, also a number of sermons in manuscript by the Rev. Thomas Burns, D.D. ; to Alex. Brydie, Lawrence, for copy of the census of the Province of Otago, 1854 ; to the editor of the Tapamii Courier for a pamphlet relating to the Moa Flat Estate, past and present; to Mr Alex. Millar, Roslyn (Robert Henderson, 1861), for a photo, of a family group; to Mr Peter Dick, for a framed photo, of his father and mother. i\ho arrived by the Alpine on September 12, 1859, as a commemoration of the jubilee of their arrival; to Mr A. [ held in the hall on Tuesday, August 31, Mr Donald Reid (president) being in the chair. The gathering was a great success, the seating accommodation being taxed to its utmost. The ladies of the association, with their usual liberality, provided refreshments for the evening, and the arrangements made by the Ladies' Committee for serving such a large gathering were excellent, and added very materially to the enjoyment of old and young. Votes of thanks were passed to the ladies who supplied refreshments, the Ladies' Committee, and to the ladies and gentlemen who supplied the programme of songs, thus making the gathering the success it undoubtedly was. The opening of the Museum and portrait gallery was very much appreciated, and a large number took advantage of the occasion to look on old friends' faces and pictures of the early days, and to point out to the young generation the changes which had taken place during half a century.
