Mental Depression.
In, the great majority of eases of mental •depression tilvere are throe things which may bo <\one witn sdvantage. (1) Get the blood as clear as possible from waste products. (2) Rest th~ heart, so that it may recover ite power ard tone. (3) Lessen it's work an 1 chances of ced?ma of the brain by lessoning the intake of fluids. And thero is a fourt l i thing, though as „ a rule this is best done after the others have produced a decided effect, and that is to *trengt'°sn tho heart muscle by tonics ar.'l plenty of food rich ir proteid. For no tonics will screm>chcn musoles if there is nof 6um<.isnt food to keep them well iiour^hc l . Treatment follows very simply from these considerations, and both prevention and ti-r>atment necessarily entail the constant use of good food — that is, food* siifh as milk. chee«e. cereals, vegetables, roots, and fruits which are free from an e\oc«s of liantin, as also the avoidance of toa, cofi'ee, and cocoa, rthich are full of this pol-soa, but contain no nourishment. Prevention, of course, means the exclusion of all uniteee-ivary waste products, and it is interesting to note that one and th© same substance (the xanthin in flesh, tea, and coffee, etc.) is the cause of rheumatism, and heart disease at one time of life, and of obstructed capillary circulation at a later period ; just as joint troubles and depression alternate in so many people. So that the complete shutting out of this one substance early in life powerfully affects two great causes of depression, and bad temper.—" M. D.," in the British .Health Re-
