INFLUENCE OF FER TILISERS ON THE STEMS OF CEREALS.
From the result of experiments that have been made to test the influence of different fertilisers on the steins of cereals, it would appear that phosphoric acid possesses the faculty of strengthening the stem formation,, and that, on thq other hand, applications of potash and lime exert a tendency in an" opposite direction. Nitrogen applied in large quantities weakens the stems, but when used in conjunction witsb phosphoric acid this tendency i* obviated to a great extent. Toe eonoiosioa .arrived at- is that od soils where there is _a tendency of the, crop to becotae lodged vit is advisable to— (1) drill thinly, (2) select a suitable variety, (3), take carei that the plant has an ample supply of available phosphoric acid.
