TABLE TALK

Monday Evening. I On Monday evening the annual TJniver- • sity ball was held in the Art Gallery, a great ' number of people being present. Among the visitors were the Christchurch girls' hockey team and the Sydney footballers. The ballroom was decorated with flags, and the Art Gallery, which was used for sitting out in, was most comfortably arranged with lounges of all descriptions. Little tables with sweets were placed about every here and there. Supper was in the water-colour room, small tables being used, vases of daffodiJs and greenery adding to the decorations. Girls' Hockey Club played the Dunedin girls* hockey team. After a very exciting game the home team came off victorious. On Thursday afternoon the Christchurch gills played the "Waitaki High School boys at hockey, -the winners being the Christchurch: girls. On Saturday mofrning most of tho visitors left for the north. On Thursday Mrs Colquhoun gave & luncheon party at her residence in High street, the guest of the day being Mia Tipping, who shortly leaves for England. On Tuesday afternoon the Misses Maokerras invited a few friends to afternoon tea to saj; good-bye lo Miss Olive Turton, who leaves shortly for the north. On Wednesday afternoon Captain and Mrs Tipping gave an "At home " at the Ax? Gallery. The host and hosteSß received their guests in the hall; which was .made into a most comfortable* and-~luxario<us drawing room. Lounge seats and' comfortable dhairs were arranged in various parta of tho halL Small tables, set out for tea,' witir all * kinds of dainties on them, were placed about the hall, so "the guests were enabled to have a pleasant tete-a-tete over the cup that cheers- A splendid band was situated ati the corner of the hall, rendering delightful music the whole time. Palms, pot plants, and various bowls of flowers added greatly to the artistic effect of the drawing room. After having partaken of tea the Misses Tower gave a short dialogue, which was distinctly clever nnd amusing, and much enjoyed by all. It took the form of a fancy dress ball, and with the many original cfeotumes that were worn the hall presented a very charming; appearance.. Miss Bethell (England) is the guest of Mrs Hoskinig (Kaituna). Mrs C. Rattray left for Waikouaiti on Saturday. - Miiss Neill is at present spending a few weeks at Waikouaiti. Misses D- and S. The senior ladies' handicap golf competition (for silver button), also the junior handicap competition (for ball), which were postponed from last week owing io the bad weather, were played off on Monday afternoon, and resulted in a win. for Mrs D. J. Gilmoux for the seniors, and Mts A. M. Macdonald for the juniors. On Monday evening Mrs W- Quinn, Connon street, was the 'loatess for the Ladies' Bridge Club. On Wednesday afternoon a representative team of hockey players from Wanganui met a Southland 1 representative team, and a very interesting game wa3 playtd in Queen's I*ark. A large number of spectators were present. The game resulted in a draw, each learn scoring one goal. On Thursday afternoon" the members of the Ladies' Golf Club held a driving competition for a trophy of six balls. The winner was Mrs Handyeide (124 yds). This lady also dtove the four best balls in the competition. Afternoon tea was provided by the Misses Tucker. On Friday evening Mrs C. J. Brodrick, Kelvin road, gave a very enjoyable progr«6siv«. euchre party -for Miss IX M'Lean. Miss t>. Smith _<md Mr B. Williams were 1 the winner© of first prizes. The booby prizes* fell to Mies Hackworth- and Mr L. Bush. 4- delicious supper was served in the dining room, the table being " prettily decorated with daffodils and violets.
