The peculiar, almost unique, shape of the earliest issues of Cape Colony has always marked them out as objects for the phila- : telist'e ambition, and the old collections I which are submitted to us generally contain epecimens of the 4d of 1855-1858. Unfortunately, they have nearly always been subjected to rough handling, and ac often as not have been firmly stuck down to the pages of the album with gum. In 1890 one could get a used example of the 4-d for 6d ' and one of the Id for 2s. To-day they are respectively catalogued at 2s 6d and 7e bd. I Tjhe other two values of this set, the od | lilao and Is green, are hardly ever seen, and as for the other triangular series, the value of the commonest variety is something like £3 The annual general meeting of Stanley Gibbons, Ltd., was held at 391 Strand, W.C., on Friday, May 28 last. The business done during the year was re-ported to have been the largest and most profitable for some years past. The resignation of Mr W. P. Barnsdall as a director wa6 accepted, Mr I Frank JPhillips was elected a director of thecompany I A stamp dealer' 6 life is not a happy one ! At least, that of his clerk who has to elucidate the meaning of some of the foreign letters is not. As an example, I reproduce the following model of conciseness which was received the other morning by Stanley Gibbons, Ltd. : — Constantinos J Constantinides MarsUhepthin Liruassol Chypre My dear friend May 1309 S. tanley gilbons j 391 stand Lordon England Your pray very like my return the your bites and of your gatalongs and your shall of your kind.
