UNEASINESS CAUSED BY A , THOUGHTLESS ACT.. Mr F. Wagener, of Pukenui (206 miles ; from Auckland, and situated on the Ho- I whora River), telegraphed on the Ist ] iast. : — "I found 25 lifebelts on the west : coast to-day. Five appeared to be marked j with blood, and are covered with blue and I white stripes. They came ashore to-day, and a search will be made along the coast I as far as Cape Maria Van Diemen to-night j A heyy gale from the N.E.N and N.W. ' is raging. "On thß following day an empty fruit case, marked "Mokoia," was washed ! ashore near the same place, and as the ' Mokoia was on a voyage from New Zea- j land to Sydney, naturally a little uneasiness was held by those having friends on boa' d. The Mokoia reached Sydney ttfely without mishap. THE; VANCOUVER SERVICE. BRISBANE, September 5. The following are the Marama's passengers: For Auckland — Dr Rayner, Messrs Fenwick, Whitehead, Shacklock (2), | Graham, Clarke. Cranbourne, Russel, l Raynor, Cunning-ham, Gairet, Meedamee , F-awick and Graham and child, Misses Keith, Clarke (2). For Dunedin— Mr and Mrs Underwood. For Wellington — Messrs | Dawson and Hawky. For Lyttelton — Mr . • and Mrs Hareton and two chifdTen. Her | cargo for New Zealand porte amounts to 17 tons. The explanation of the mystery - came from the steamer Cornwall. It appears that when off the coast a general clearing up was .engaged in. Among other things thrown overboard were about 25 old lifebelts which were worn out and useless. What was supposed to be bloodstains must have been rust stains.
