THE BRITISH BORDER LEICESTER FLOCK BOOK.
1 THE SYSTEM OF REGISTRATION. In a recent issue we gave some pai*iculars of the manner in which entries are made in the Border Leicester Flock Book »f Great Britain, as supplied by Mr Wood, the see rotary. These particulars showed that no such system of inspection of flocks as was introduced in New Zealand was carried out in the Horns Country. As the matt«r of inspection excited much interest amongst flock-owners iv the Dominion, and was the subject of a good deal of controversy in our 'columns, it will be of interest to reproduce some of the rules and -regulations of the British Border Leicester Society. Rule 2 states that the obj«ots of- the society^ shall be the -encouragement of the breeding of Bord-er^Leieester sheep and the maintenance of the purity of the. breed by the institution and publication of a Flock Book and the investigation of cases of doubtful and suspected pedigrees, the obtaining of classes and augmentation of prizes at various shows, and otherwise. Rule 11 states that the council shall ■have power to delete from the roll of members the name of any member of the society found guilty by the council of wilful misrepresentation in making an entry foi Flock Book, or of wilful infringement of any rule, regulation, or by-law of the society, and such individual shall cease to . be a member of the society . Regulations for registration are «& follows : — •1. Only such thepp as are proved to the Satisfaction of the council to be purebred. Border Leicester sheep shell 'be eligible for entry. . ■ „ 2. Th«rc shall be three forms of registration—viz , (1) Flock, (2) ram, (3) ewe. 'For flock registration and registration of swes, sheep must belong to a member of society. Flocks shall be registered under a number to be known as the flock numboi, and rams shall be registered individually, under a number to be known as the ram number. Ewes shall also be registered individually, but only under the flock number. 3. All applications for registration muar be made upon the printed forms of the society, and the particulars required therein fully stated and certified by the breeder and owner of the sheep, or their accre•clit4±cl representative, for j>iz4>Hoati-oo in tl*«Flock Book The council reserve the right of declining any entry, if sq_ recommended by the Editing Committee; and should the council, after entry *is registered, discover any inaccuracy, or fraudulent entry, they shall have the right to cancel such entry, and to expunge the flook in question from the Flock Bcok. All entries must be accompanied by the fees indicated in regulation 10, and the member's subscription, for ourrent year must have been paid beforo any entry can be received. 4. Foi registration of a flock, applications are only received, on condition that applicant (i> includes all ewes and rams in service in his flock fox indh'Wual registra-. tion, and -shall register annually under the 'flock • tie name* and registered number _of all rams in* service , in the flock each jtcar; (2) agrees to the inspection of -his flot4c (if necessary), at the instance of the Edit- . ing " Committee 'or council ; and (3) upon his flock .number' being accepted for entry, and being allotted the registered- flock number,, shall have each sheep tattooed in the manner indicated in Regulation 5. 5. Every fleck on being accepted for entry shall have a registered flock number allotted to it. and a tattoo stamp containing this number and the registered mark of the society will be supplied to the member, so long as he continues the registered flock owner, for the purpose of tattooing the inside of" the left ear of every ewe and ran in the flock accepted for registration, and the progeny of such registered flock within three months of birth, and while the property of the registered owner.. The right ear of every ram and ewe in the flock, and the progeny thereof within three months of birth, while the property of the registered owner, must be tattooed with a letter indicating the year of birth, and also a number, together distinguishing the animal from, any other animal in the flock— A to represent 1898; B, 1899; C, 1900; D, 1901; and so on; and Z to represent 1897; V, 1896; X,1895, and so on, and the sheep of each year being numbered consecutively from 1 upwards, the number being tattooed immediately after the letter indicating the year, or otherwise according to such regulation as the council or society may make," and the registered owner .shall keep a. register showing the padigree of each sheep so marked, which register shall at all times be open to the "^inspection of the- Editing Committee. In the- case of the first year the progeny shall be marked immediately after flook accepted for registration. No such die of stamp of the registered mark of the society and the registered flock number shall '.«e used by a member except or the purpose of marking his registered flook and the progeny thereof. The member shall pay suoh suns as may be fixed by the council for the use of such die or stamp, which shall remain the property of the society and be returnable to the society. In the case of the registration of a flock, the owner shall have well cheep marked within six weeks aft«i intimation, of acceptance of entry, and return a certificate on the society's printed form to that effect, giving the full particulars required in form, otherwise the registration will not be proceeded with. 6 For registration of rams, every stud rain lni^t be named, and no name which has previously been registered or "accepted for registration in the Flock Book cart be duplicated. No name consisting of more than three words can be accepted. Each ram shall, when registered, have a number affixed to it in the Flock Book, which num ber 6hall be known as the ram number. In the case of Vols. 1 and 2," every ram must b& registered under a flock to entitle it to separate registration. 7. For registration of ewes, no name can be attached to a ewe for entry. Each ewe shall bo registered in Flock Book under the flock number, with their private flook number and letter to be tattooed on right ear as indicated in Regulation No. 5. 8. Excepting for Vols. 1 and 2 of Flock Book, all flock-3, rams, and ewes to be eligible for entry must be the produce of registered sires and dams. In the case of Yols. 1 and 2, proof to the satisfaction of the Editing Committee or council that the animals proposed for entry are purebred Border Leicester sheep will be required before any entry can bs accepted. 8. No animal can be entered in the Flock i Book unless application for entry be made
whilst it is in the United Kingdom", or unless satisfactory reason be givfen for such application not having been so made. 10. "Tie entfy fees will be, to a member, for each ram ss, and for each ewe 3d ov first entry of flock and 3d for each ewe added To a non -member, for each ram 10s. 11. All entries to be made by the 31st December in each year, the Flock Book to ba published annually in April, and a copy to be furnished to each member free; the charge 'for copy to non-members to be £1 Is.
