AUSTRALIA v. ESSEX. LONDON, September 2.
The weather was bright and sunny, and the wicket soft for the return match at Leyton, Australia v. ISssex. The county won the toss, Armstrong, Layer, Carkeek, and Hartigan were omitted from the; Colonials' team. Fane and Douglas were the first batsmen. Cotter and Macartney were entrusted with the attack. Runs came steadily. At 50 O'Connor relieved Cotter, and off his first delivery Fane was caught at second-slip, while from the third ball, without any addition to the score, Turner was taken at the wickets. Douglas,* after batting carefully for 100 minutes, played the South Australian on. Three for 81. M'Gahey (who was lame, and had a man to run for him) and the Rev. Mr Gillinghaiti then became partnered, and they gave a display of bright batting. The" century was hoisted after 125 minutes.' play. The wicket after Lunch was easy. M'Gahey lasted 125 minutes. . He plaj'ed a strong defensive game, and went in for fine hard off-driv-ing. His partnership with GillingKam Had yielded 67 in 65 minutes. Four for 160. Carpenter was dismissed by a brilliant right-handed catch high up by Cotter, who was fielding at mid-off. Five for 192. Gdllingham showed splendid leg-hitting and driving. He batted for 140 minutes, hitting eight 4's before being take nin the slips by Cotter, who made a fine catch. Six for 219. Reeves and Gibson showed good cricket, but the other*, made a poor stand. The seventh wicket fell at 249, and the eighth and ninth at 256. With only five minutes left to bat the Australians lost one wicket. The attendance was moderate. September 3. The weather was sunny and the wicket good for the second day's play BaTdsley accompanied Carter to the wicket. The latter carried his overnight score (6) to 32, eluiefty by late cutting, and was then caught by Gibson, who was standing back from the wicket Two for 46. Trumper followed. Both batsmen by steady play increased the scoi'e by 50 in 40 minutes, and added the century in 75 minutes. At the luncheon adjournment the- total was 173 — Rirdsley 55, Trumper 71. On resuming Trumper immediately gave an easy chance to Carpenter in the slips. He had sho-wn superb driving and leg glancing, and during Iris stay at the wicket 6 hit eight 4's. Three for 175. Bardsley stayed till the score was 205, and was then caught low down at 6econd slip. He had played a patient innings, a-nd escaped an easy chance of being run out at 46. Gregory succumbed first ball, Gibson making another fine catch, standing well back from the wicket. Five for 205. Macartney lost his wicket in playing forward. Six for 218. Ransford, who was unsteady at the .«tart. livened up afterwards. The seventh wicket fell at 228 and the eighth at 262. The last two wickets added 16 runs, and the innings, which lasted 240 minutes, yielded 278 runs. Cotter was no-balled four times in the fir.-t two overs of Essex's second innings. ■Stump 1 * were drawn before 6 o'clock owing to duskiness. Three thousand were present. September 4. Owing to rain pl-tv did not start till 3.^5 p.m. to-day. The wicket was soft. Essex lofrt one w icket for 57 runs, and then rain came on again, and the match w:..i abandoned.
