CFkom Our Own Cohbkspokdekt.) -" GREYMOUTH, August 30, In these days of shortness of money, it is interesting to note that the Greymouth. • town clerk has received a circular from a London financier offering, to give a quotation for the issue ot any loan to the extent of two million pounds sterling. The German South Sea island of Matupi h-xi bsen brought somewhat into touch with Westport, on account of the large quantity of local coal despatched to the spot. Captain Aronsen, who has just completed the round trip in his barque Saturnua, informed a representative of the Westport Times that the coal is used by the German warships. Five of these boats were expected shortly, and large stocks of coal were laid in (including a cargo from Newcastle), but only one tteamer arrived, and now the depot is overstocked. The German engineers much prefer Westport coal, and their navy department 13 , willing to pay a better price than for the Newcastle aiticle. There are only, eight Europeans at Matupi (seven Germans and a Queenslander). Kanakas do the coal work, and labour very hard. The water on the island is very bad, and consequently a good deal of liquor is drunk. - Much German beer is imported, and if the consignees cannot sell it to the natives and visiting sailors, they manage to dispose of it themselves.
