Tha monthly meeting of the above coun- J cil, held on Tuesday at Milton, was attended } by Crs H. M. Driver (chairman), J. M. I Beggv, J. Tougjh. P. Haggart, W. BelK D. i Gardyne, T. H. Russell, J Adam, D. Boyd, J. dark, and J. Smith. A FINANCE HEPOET. Accounts amounting to £596 17s 6d were , l*assed for payment. The receipts for the ' month had been £517 19s lOd. WOttKS COMMITTEE. 'The Works Committee reported having j dealt with correspondents, etc., as follows : I Ewen M'Lennan, Berwick, wrote asking ' that something be done to improve the road j from his place to Berwick. — The* sum of £5 ! was voted for the road. The Clerk of the Fairfax School Committee wrote notify- ' ing the council of the dangerous state of ' the road near the approach to the school . residence. — Engineer reported that tho , matter had been attended to. Henderson ; *nd Davis applied to have that part of the Coombe Ray -road metailed from the Coal Company's new railway crossing to the white satid cutting, a <distaaice of about half a mile, and offered to give a fortnight's carting if the work- be done during the latter .part, of October. — The sum of £sff" was granted' for expenditure in October. Tho request of Wm Lovie, Stirling, to put a ' kerbing on "the street along his property •was agreed to. W. Mulvine. Inchc-lutha, 1 drew attention to the fact that water was standing in tho ditch between Steel's and ■, Renton'fl, and flowing on to his land. — j Engineer to report. Permission was granted N. C. Stowe to erect two gates on the- road through section 14a, Greenfield | Settlement. — It was decided to asJr the > Fairfax School Committee to take immediate 6taps to prevent the water from the school from flowing on to the road. — It was agreed ; that a footpath 3fc wkfo should be pro- ' vktecl for about eight -chains in Martin's subdivision. — On the motion of Cr Drner, 1 it was decided to put a new culvert in on ! the Phosphate road. — Cr Begg moved, and '' it was carried— "That tha engineer be authorised to have tho ba!an«> of tha £150 grant expended on the Blackburn rca<!s." — The report was approved of. , CUBRESPON'DENCE. The Clerk of Mount Stuart Road Board wrote giving a report of the meeting of ratepayers in tho Mount Stuart road dis- i triot, held on 31st August for tho purpose of deciding whether or not the read through sections 4, 1 of 5, 1 of 6, 1 of 9, 1 of 10, j block XXXIIL Toko, and section 1 of 1, block XXXVIII, Toko, should be clo K d. The meeting resolved that th-s road be j clossd, and. that th© County Council be ' asked to confirm ths decision of th«-*rate- j payers.— The council decided to acquiesco [ in the request. | J. H. Shaw, Puketi, asked that the coun- [ cil take the _ueoessary steps to have the 1 road through allotment 14a to~thc boundpry : of his property,' 13a, Greenfield, formed and graded. — Received. j Solomon, Gascoigne, and Hay, solicitors, Dunedin, wrote re removal of fence on Miss [ C Patterson's property at Berwick. — The Works Commi'i.tee recommended that a surveyor be employed to define the line of the fence. — Agreed to. i Dr M'Cormick -wrote notifying a case J of diphtheria at Moneymore Schoolhouse. Dr Ogston, Health Officer, wrote in the same matter, and intimated that it w-as contemplated that local authorities would 1 have to undertake duties in connection %vith ! the Public Health Act which had hitherto been carried out by the departmant's inspectors. — It was reported that the case was ' now convalescent, and every precaution had , been taken. D. Stewart and Sons, solicitors. Balclutha, ' •wrote asking lhe council's consent io the j dedication of a public road in re the tranp- j fer of property from A. Anderson, Stirling, ' to Hugh Bryce. — Consent was accorded. ! A letter v.a? received from Alexander j Campbell. Milton, asking for a share of the council's cariing. — It was decided to grant the request for throe months alternatively with another carter. Reid and Bundle, solicitors. Dunedin, complained of the condition of the road on ihe property sold by the late William Duff's estate, Maihola, to Mr M'Rae. — Engineer to report. On receipt ol a letter from James Dippie forwarding an account for £2 for the clearing of a drain at Barnego, Cr Begg said they had had a solicitors' opinion in connection with this matter. If the ditch was s public one they should pay the amount, but if it was a settler's ditch only they ■were not justified in paying any money. He moved, and ib_was Carried, that a copy \
' of the solicitor's opinion should be sent to I the writer. j Isaac Thomas Waiting wrote drawing attention to the state of the approaches to Wangaloa bridge, and also requested the council to remove the gate there. — Left to the engineer to report on the approaches. With regard to the bridge, it was decided that the gate on the bridge should be removed and the. other gates placed on hinges. The Puntman at Taieri Mouth, Thomas Palmer, wrote asking for an increase in ealary. — It was decided to reply that the fees were so small as not to permit of an increase being granted. Mr R Craigie asked, in person, for a grant for the road leading to the ferry at Taieri Beach. — Ifc was decided that the engineer should report to next meeting. Scott's ditch. In accordance with "notice given, Cr Haggart moved, and it was carried, that the council's motion of September, 1901, giving permission to Mr Scott, Tokomairiro, to open a ditch, be rescinded, and that he be given 14 days' notice of the council's intention to fill in the ditch.
