FIRES.

{ AUCKLAND. September 6. A house at Birkenhead owned Viv Mr .T. M'Pbail, an*! occupied by Mr William Sampson, was destroyed by fire, ■with the contents, on Saturday ni^ht Insurance* £225 on the building in the South British ; furniture, £50 in the State office. A fire on the premises in Lower Queen street, occupied by Mr J. _ Green, clothier, considerably damaged the stock. It was

valued at £950, and —as insured in the New Zealand office for £465. GISBORNE. September 1. A cottage owned by Mr Derery. and occupied by Mr Bueh. -was destroyed by fire this morning. The. inmates had a very narrow escape. Infiirenees : South British, £250; National, £125. WELLINGTON, September 2. This afternoon a fire was discovered in a house on Siith-erland road, Maranui, owned by Mr Wallace, aud occupied by Mr Grosvenor. The brigade promptly responded to the summons, but on arrival at Maranui it was found that, owing to lack of water, its servioes were of little use. A strong southerly wind wss blowing, and the names spread rapidly to the adjoining house, which was occupied by Mr Goodwin, and. owned by Mi* Alexa-nder MjJligan. This house also wa6 totally destroyed. A third house, also owned by Mr Malligam, and in the occupation of Mr H. ii'Kinnon. was likewise destroyed. Tho flames were blown on to a fouirth cottage. This was occupied by Mr Williams and some other young fellows as a bachelors' establishment. The owner of it is Mrs Walker. The ■whole of the building was destroyed, and a like fate befell a fifth house, owned by Mr Robert Martin, and occupied by Mr F. Bdcnonds. The furniture and effects in. Mr Grosvenor's house were all burnt, but from the others a fair amount was salvaged. On« of Mr Milligan's houses was insured for £175 in. the Commercial Union office, and the other for £200 in the Royal office. Mr Wallace's house was insured for £100 in tie .South British office, Mrs Walker's for £200 in the National office, and Mr Martin's for £400 in the Ocean office. Mr Grosvenor's furniture was insured for £100 in the Yorkshire office.
