MO RE IMMIGRANTS.
THE CORNWALL'S PASSENGERS. AUCKLAND, August 31. The steamer Cornwall, from Liverpool, arrived to-day with another batch of immigrants. She has somewhat over 100 for all ports, the distribution being as follows : — Auckland, 31j Wellington, 30; Lyttelton, 11; Dunedin, 11; New Plymouth, five ; Westport, four ; Gisborne, four ; Napier, twoj Bluff, two ; and Greymouth. one. The immigrants created a favourable impression on first acquaintance, the majority of them being young men of good physique.
Owing to the run on taxi-oabs, hansoms, which used to bo let out in London for 12s a day, are now going for 6s. A petition, emanating from the Mataura Island district, has been forwarded to the postal authorities, praying 1 that a daily service be established between Pine Bush and Edendalc, via. Mataura Island and Seaward Downs. This proposed service, it will be noted, embraces a different route from a.ny of those affecting the same area for which tenders are being invited by the department.
