Notes from Cromwell. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
.^CROMWELL, September 3. The heavy rain during the week put the river up considerably, but the weather turned" cold, with snow on the high country, and hard frosts during the last two nights, so there is every prospect of a low river again. The Hartley and Riley, the Cromwell Syndicate's, and the Electric No. 3 dredges had to stop owing to the rise. The Rioe and Shine dredges are doing exceptionally well now, and good returns should continue. The No. 1 dredge will not get over the rich side of the cut twice this week, consequently the return will not -reach last week's total. The Keystone borer bottomed another hole at the Kawarau Gorge at about 70ft, but was working «tt>wn the bank without obtaining anything like good prospects. It is almost a certainty that a rich run comes through the Cromwell flat from the Kawarau Gorge, but this, unfortunately, will not be tested at present. When the pipes are drawn the machine will leave to start operations at Bannockburn, where something rich is expected to be found in the deep ground there.
